CHICAGO (CBS.MW) - Investors walked away in masses from most
retail stocks in late trading Friday, leaving the sector sharply lower.
The S&P Retail Index ($RLX: news, msgs) closed down a hefty 19.06, or
2.2 percent, to 839.65. Though the index was down all day, the
biggest losses came in the last two hours of trading.
Defying the sector for the second consecutive week was Staples Inc.
(SPLS), closing up a robust 1 3/8, or 8.1 percent, to 18 3/8 as the
most heavily traded stock on the index Friday. Since hitting a 52-week
low of 13 1/2 on June 7, Staples has been steadily climbing.

Staples Opens Store at Newark International Airport

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 13, 2000--Staples, Inc.,
(SPLS), operator of more than 1,200 superstores worldwide, today
announced the opening of its third airport store, at the Newark
International Airport. The Newark airport store will offer travelers
three ways to shop: traditional retail, a kiosk linked to Staples.com
and a direct phone line to Staples catalog representatives.
Staples recently received an award as the "Best New Specialty Airport
Retail Concept" by World Airport Retail News and the "Most Innovative
Concession" Award for the Philadelphia International
Airport store from Airport Councils International. Staples airport
stores are also open at the Philadelphia International Airport and
Boston Logan International Airport.
